When the hype first started about the novels, I was weary of reading them – having been disappointed too many times. I was beyond relieved when I realized that I couldn’t put them down and waited with baited breath for the next installment.
Then, I read the ending, the tragic scene that made so many of us lose angry. And I threw the book away from me.
How could Suzanne Collins do this? How could she destroy the reason for the entire series? What was she thinking? (In case any of you haven’t read the series or don’t know the ending, I’m doing my best to not reveal it.)
All I will say is that although I’m looking forward to the last installment of the series (and it comes out around my birthday!), I am hoping that Hollywood changes that one scene. It hurt and was wrong to be included.

I couldn’t agree more. I loved the series until the ending. The ending was needless and served no purpose. I will still watch though and hope that maybe they will adjust the ending as they have with so many other movies.

The problem with the ending, as we’ve discussed, is that it caused Katniss’s personal fight to be for moot. In any good story, there is always a reason motivating a character – whether they are fighting for or against something in and of itself is inconsequential. When it comes to heroes, they need MOTIVATION. And if you destroy their motivation, even if you think it’s what would happen in real life, then you’ve destroyed the character AND your story.
Hopefully, Hollywood listens to all of us. We’ll see……

I’m really torn about Mockingjay. On one hand, revolutions are costly for individuals on so many levels, a point which Collins certainly highlights; on the other, it’s so painful to read. I will definitely go see it and most likely also buy a copy.

There was so much in the novels that was definitely painful. Revolutions can be costly but necessary. When the strong/powerful/rich/lucky take advantage of those around them, at some point people have to stand up. And that’s what they had to do in Mockingjay and the same is happening around the world. Sometimes, it’s more costly to do nothing than it is to uprise.
